Shanghai’s rich pursue advanced health care

DEMAND for sophisticated health care is high among the rich in Shanghai as their satisfaction with their own health and care for their parents are slightly below the national average.

The city has 205,000 people boasting more than 10 million yuan (US$1.5 million) in personal assets and are defined as high net worth individuals, said a health care and elderly-care report released yesterday jointly by Hurun Research Institute and Taikang Life Insurance.

But although Shanghai ranked as the No. 3 biggest city for wealthy Chinese, the city’s health care sector was described as mediocre in terms of service quality, environment and use of advanced equipment.

Over half of the rich people in Shanghai would like to try private hospitals and Internet-based health care services as alternative to public hospitals.

Doubts about caring for the elderly by nursing homes were sharply higher in Shanghai as 40 percent of the rich were dissatisfied with services compared to 29 percent nationwide.

Meanwhile 76 percent of the rich in Shanghai showed great interest in emerging elderly care communities which boast more health care professionals and offering social life and entertainment activities.
