Metro Cash & Carry plans new China stores

Metro Cash & Carry China said it will open two to three new stores in the country in the next five months as demand from small business owners and caterers increases.

Metro plans to open about 10 new stores — seven have already opened — in this fiscal year ending on September 30.

The company already has 76 stores in 53 domestic cities.

Jeroen de Groot, president of Metro Cash & Carry China, said today that the company will focus on corporate clients who buy gifts for employees or clients, as well as small business operators and restaurant owners.

China is Metro Cash & Carry's third largest market in terms of stores, behind Germany and France.

It will launch a food distribution center for caterers in Qingdao later this year to concentrate on the service for its core corporate customers.

In the 12 months ended September 30, 2013, sales jumped 8 percent to 17 billion yuan (US$2.7 billion).
