Coca-Cola unveils China sustainability report

COCA-COLA China yesterday released its 2012-2013 China Sustainability Report in Beijing, pledging to work with its long-term partners to drive social progress and business growth in the country.

Henrique Braun, President of Coca-Cola Greater China & Korea, and leaders from Coca-Cola bottlers in China announced five sustainability commitments between now and 2020, with a focus on Women, Water and Well-being.

The report was unveiled during the final of the Enactus World Cup, which took place in the China National Convention Center in Beijing. Coca-Cola China also hosted an open dialogue on sustainability partnerships with 100 college students from all over the world, joined by industry experts and strategic partners.

The report highlights innovative collaboration models and partnerships to address complex environmental issues. It noted that Coca-Cola China is striving to make a positive contribution to local communities, and to create social value in a sustainable way with its powerful brands, extensive distribution network, and know-how.

“In Coca-Cola China, our vision is to embed sustainability into our daily business operations. Everyone in our China business is committed to our sustainability goals around Wellness, Women and Water, and we are making this part of how we do business,” Braun said.

Liu Baocheng, Professor of International Business School from the University of International Business and Economics, said at the ceremony that he appreciated the sustainability model of Coca-Cola China, as it closely parallels to the State’s vision of building “A beautiful China.”

“To live this vision, we must fully tap all social entities to promote comprehensive social, cultural and environmental development. Business could and should play an important role in this journey,” Liu said. “Coca-Cola China, the well-established corporate citizen, has created an industrial role model in social responsibility by strategically combining economic and social values in their sustainability efforts.”

In late 2011, Coca-Cola Greater China and Korea set up a dedicated sustainability team with integrated functional expertise in line with the company’s global sustainability priorities. The team was led by Zhang Huaying, Vice President of Sustainability, Coca-Cola Greater China and Korea.

“Sustainability is a relatively new as a business function, but it perfectly reflects thousands of years of traditional Chinese philosophy,” Zhang told college students attending the Enactus World Cup. “We believe that everyone has the power to make a contribution, big or small to making the world a better place.”

In 2013, Coca-Cola China launched the “5by20” initiative in China together with China Women’s Development Foundation. More than 16,200 women have improved their marketing, operation and financial skills through in-classroom or online training.

In Guangxi, Coca-Cola China supports comprehensive sustainable agriculture initiatives, including pipelining nutrient-rich reclaimed water from sugar suppliers to sugarcane fields, and building drip irrigation to increase water efficiency.

In addition, partnering with One Foundation and local civil departments, Coca-Cola China has established a “Clean Water 24” program for immediate disaster relief, leveraging its nation-wide distribution network. In 2013 alone, Coca-Cola China responded to 10 natural disasters and provided more than 3.57 million bottles of water to people in affected areas.

Coca-Cola has also organized over 150 community walk events and 66 field health lectures in 30 cities, sharing the joy of physical exercise and a balanced healthy lifestyle with over 3.1 million citizens.
