Coca-Cola kicks off ‘Walk for Love’ in Changsha

COCA-COLA China, teaming up with charity One Foundation, launched on Saturday the “Walk for Love” campaign in Changsha, Hunan Province.

The 36-kilometer hiking program aims to raise funds for the “Clean Water Project” that focuses on improving the quality of drinking water for children in rural areas.

Being the fourth leg of the charitable hiking campaign, the Changsha event has already collected 450,000 yuan (US$73,170) and fund raising will continue until November 18.

Hunan is among the first batch of regions to install water purification equipment for rural schools under the “Clean Water Project.”

Children from Fenghuang County, who have benefited from the initiative, joined hands with volunteers on the day to cheer up hikers.

Since the charitable scheme started in 2013, more than 7,000 hikers have participated in the walk campaign and raised more than 4 million yuan for the clean water project.

This year, the “Clean Water Project” is expected to install equipment for more than 100 schools across China and access 40,000 children in rural areas to clean drinking water.

Among the 400-plus teams, one team attracts great attention from many people. It’s the “Seeking Truth” team with members including CCTV commentator Bai Yansong and David G. Brooks, chairman and executive vice president of Coca-Cola Greater China and Korea, who joined hands to pursue their charity dream together.

Before the event, Bai Yansong bought 100 copies of his book “Do you feel happy” and raised 26,000 yuan through the Sina Charity and One Foundation platforms under a book signing campaign.

Although the funds raised are insufficient to improve drinking water for rural kids, the campaign succeeded in helping boost the awareness of more people and prompting them to think about the issue, Bai Yansong said.

The campaign is aimed at encouraging more people to be participants in charity instead of being onlookers, according to Bai Yansong.

“The core value of our charity work is to encourage participation. Hiking is an easy activity in which almost everyone can take part. Dreams can be grand and faraway, yet to take part with the first step is simple,” said Li Jin, general-secretary of One Foundation.

Having nurtured a partnership with One Foundation for more than two years, Coco-Cola China released in 2014 its first charitable bottled mineral water brand — Ice Dew Chun Yue. The company pursues happy charity work and the value of “I can drink clean water and I will help others do it.”

“We understand no single institution or enterprise can ensure safe drinking water for the whole society. Therefore, we join hands with One Foundation to launch the ‘Walk for Love’ charity platform to gather the strength of the public, bottling partners and associates to jointly improve drinking water for children in remote areas and to contribute as more as possible to their healthy growth,” said Brooks.

The charity QR code is on the product packing so that buyers could join in charity more quickly and share their feelings after doing so. In the meantime, Coco-Cola China and One Foundation will bring more influential partners into the bigger stage via the Ice Dew Chun Yue brand.
