Amway stays with Nutrilite, optimistic over China

AMWAY said it would stick to the traditional Nutrilite brand as it is upbeat about the nutritional food and supplements market in China because of the growing awareness about health consciousness.

Sam Rehnborg, president of Nutrilite Health Institute and the son of Nutrilite founder, Carl Rehnborg, said he was excited to visit the Amway Botanical Research Center again and to meet the scientists working there.

“China is the biggest market in the world for the Nutrilite brand, which is the best selling nutritional supplement and it’s also the place where I saw that my father’s dream came into reality,” he told a media briefing earlier this week.

“According to World Health Organi-zation data over the past decade, as many as 75 percent of people don’t get the minimum amount of fruit and vegetable required for their health and China’s government has also been encouraging the daily consumption of phytonutrients, and this has always been the key for our research work at the Amway Botanical Research Center,” he said.

The Nutrilite™ brand of vitamins and dietary supplements were first formulated after the brand’s founder, Carl Rehnborg, observed how the use of plants and botanicals in China promoted optimal health and natural balance.

For thousands of years, traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM, has used plants and herbs to support various aspects of human health — ranging from ginkgo to chrysanthemum to goji berries.

Carl Rehnborg realized that more than 100 years ago by observing rural and urban residents.

During his vist to the Amway Botanical Research Center, Sam Rehnborg said he was very impressed by the deep understanding and knowledge of Chinese herbal medicines by the research staff. He added that the research work would focus on how to find the effective compounds within the plants and herbal medicines that help prevent diseases.

“We want to make sure that the Amway Botanical Research Center represents an integration of the western and eastern culture and to bring modern and suitable products for consumers,” said Chen Jia, vice president of the Amway Botanical Research Center and of Amway’s China R&D and technical regulatory activities.

“This remains our biggest advantage and we hope to combine the understanding and experience of fostering plant-based food from other places of the world and to keep lifting our users’ experience as well as help them have a better understanding of their health situation,” she added.

Amway is introducing Western sustainable farming techniques to grow plants used in TCM, such as goji berries (Chinese wolfberry), evodia and chrysanthemum. These plants are being investigated for potential uses in Amway’s health and beauty products for Nutrilite and Artistry.

“Chinese herbal medicine will play an increasingly important role in nutritional food and supplements, which also represents the Chinese idea and culture of health and well-being, and we hope to bring that understanding to not only Chinese consumers but people seeking healthy lifestyle around the globe,” Chen said.

Amway officially unveiled the US$13 million Amway Botanical Research Center in Wuxi in Jiangsu Province in 2015, and the company has been studying plants associated with TCM at the site for potential future use in its health and beauty products.

The research center takes Amway back to where Nutrilite founder Carl Rehnborg first discovered the health benefits of foods consumed by people in rural areas of China.

The Amway Botanical Research Center is a latest showcase of Amway’s continuous effort to research and understand Chinese botanicals to a greater extent — using the most advanced technology and scientific practices — and integrate the findings into Nutrilite products.

It is also actively sharing academic resources with research institutions and colleges from both home and abroad.

Many of the plants already used in Nutrilite products are the same ones used in TCM, and the Amway Botanical Research Center is expanding that research to evaluate plants used in TCM for their potential benefits in future Nutrilite health and Artistry beauty products.
