Trade-offs bid to spur Tesla sales
AMERICAN electric carmaker Tesla has launched a vehicle trade-off offer in a desperate effort to revive its falling sales.
Consumers in Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou can trade their used cars for a Tesla Model S with the price of the electric sedan adjusted with the value of the old car, Tesla said in a statement.
Currently, Tesla Model S is the only model available in China and costs 648,000 yuan (US$103,971), which is less than the price of the entry-level Porsche sports car.
Tesla will evaluate the used cars and consumers can decide if they want to trade them. The trade-in program is being promoted as an initiative to lure people toward green mobility while also trying to boost Tesla’s sluggish sales.
The company exported about 3,500 cars to China since April, but its registered car park added less than 2,000 units. Neither of these two numbers are strong enough to put Tesla on track to achieve its goal of selling 5,000 cars in China, which accounts for 30 percent of its global targeted sales.
Earlier this month, Veronica Wu left Tesla as head of its China operations just a year after taking the post.
