SAIC to offer 1,000 e-vehicles for rent

SHANGHAI-BASED eHi Auto Services Co yesterday signed a 100 million yuan (US$16.1 million) sourcing deal with Shanghai SAIC Motor Corp for 1,000 electric vehicles that will be available for rent as part of moves to promote energy efficient cars.

SAIC Motor Corp will deliver Roewe E50 pure electric cars and Roewe 550 hybrid energy vehicles over the next few years, with the first batch in operation within a month or two.

The electric cars will be available for rent in Shanghai and eHi’s outlets in other first-tier cities.

Wang Xiaoqiu, vice president of SAIC Motor Corp, said at the contract signing ceremony yesterday that teaming up with car rental companies like eHi Auto Services is a key step to promote electric automobiles apart from government support and subsidy. The car rental company is offering a free charging service for the electric cars.

Last year, eHi Auto Services supplied 50 Roewe pure electric vehicles to the rental market in Shanghai, and over 90 percent of them were booked on weekdays. Shanghai opened China’s first electric car rental outlet in July 2013 in Jiading District.
