SASS in new partnership with the UK institution

THE Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (or known as SASS) signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this month with the Lau China Institute at King's College London to show commitment of working together more closely.

The Security and Crisis Management Programme (SCM) under the SASS will cooperate with the Lau China Institute in joint research, the convening of high impact seminars and public events, and production of joint publications.

The focuses of the work between King’s and SASS will be public health, environment and broad public policy issues such as One Belt One Road Initiative. The signing of the agreement includes the participation of the University of Turin (UNITO) partner of SCM. It is envisaged that this will be of wide interest in the UK, Europe and China.

Kerry Brown, a professor and director of the Lau China Institute, said: “As part of the mission of the Lau Institute in London, we aim to produce the best quality, most up to date research, and work with Chinese partners more extensively and collaboratively…The SASS is the perfect partners for this, and we are very excited by the opportunities we can explore together in the coming years.”

Li Yihai, a professor and communication director at SASS, said: “We are pleased to make this concrete step to further our collaboration in policy-oriented research. SASS covers all the major discipline areas, and as an internationally respected centre for understanding contemporary China and most crucial issues, we are delighted to work with universities like King's in London, to learn together, and to maximise the impact of our work. SCM is set up especially to study security and crises management with wide international participation.”

Alessandro Arduino, co-director of the SCM at SASS, said: “We are very pleased to collaborate with one of the leading British Universities and top research centres on contemporary China. The Lau Institute at King’s is the ideal partner in order to foster strategic and operational focus for all collaborative research programs and public policy recommendations.”

The Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences is the longest established academy for the humanities and social studies in China, with a history dating back to the 1950s, and amongst the most prestigious in the region.
