Physically challenged travelers sue Juneyao Airlines after being declined boarding

Two disabled men are suing Juneyao Airlines to fight for an equal right for ordinary people and the handicapped to travel after they were turned down by the airline when boarding a flight in November, the Pudong New Area People's Court said Thursday.

The court said the trial is now being suspended because both the two sides applied for an extension on the time limit for collecting proofs and will be later reopen.

According to the court, the two paraplegics sitting on wheelchairs, surnamed Zhan and Sheng, wanted to head to Dalian, Liaoning Province, after attending an event in Sanya, Hainan Island. They bought two flight tickets from Juneyao Airlines on November 14 last year.

However, five days later, when they arrived at the airport, they were informed that they were not allowed to board the flight without being accompanied by others. The two plaintiffs then told the airline staffers that they can travel on their own, which can be proved by their previous experiences.

The airline staffers didn't listen to them and launched a refund process. The reason about the refund given on the document is listed as "being accompanied by none and couldn't travel on their own." The staffers said that no matter the pair agree or not, the refund had become effective since then.

Since there were no other flights leaving for Dalian that day, the two men had to bought two Air China tickets instead and went to Beijing and stayed there for a night before transferring to Dalian.

Juneyao Airlines expressed that they were willing to make some compensation to the two plaintiffs in court.
