Corporate social responsibility more recognized in China

THE year of 2016 witnesses great development of corporate social responsibility in Shanghai and in China, participants said at the 15th Sino-European Corporate Social Responsibility Roundtable Forum yesterday.

“Investing in social responsibility is an effective way for companies to contribute to sustainable development goals,” said Yu Zhihong, president and editor-in-chief of China WTO Tribune at the forum. “With the maturity of CSR development in China, more companies realize that the responsibility doesn’t only mean request and constraints, but innovation and opportunities as well.”

The forum, jointly hosted by the Foreign Trade Association and the China WTO Tribune, aims to localize the sustainable development goals in the Chinese context. It helps foreign companies understand how to achieve social responsibility.

Christian Ewert, director-general of Foreign Trade Association, said decent work and economic growth, quality education and sustainable supply chain are hot topics of corporate social responsibility this year. In terms of industries, garment and textile, information and technology, footwear and furniture sectors are key focus areas currently within his association.

“Shanghai has a good environment for corporate social responsibility,” said Ewert. “Speaking of the advantages, senior management members in foreign companies in Shanghai are well aware and educated of the global social responsibility requirements. Thus foreign enterprises can better understand the goal and implement good programs to meet CSR standard.”

Also yesterday, the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai held its annual Corporate Social Responsibility Awards Ceremony to recognize companies and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to enhance social responsibility and sustainable development in China.

This year's awards were given in three categories: leadership, innovation, and engagement. Accenture China obtained the Leadership Award, Shanghai Disney Resort won the Engagement Award and the Coca-Cola Company & Green Initiatives got the Innovation Award.

Representatives from governments, business chambers, multinational companies and research institutions participated in the forum and awards ceremony, sharing their perspectives on social responsibility and how to integrate sustainable development goals into business management. There are several panel discussion sessions during the whole event.
