China issue telecom services licenses to another eight firms
China issued telecommunications service licenses to eight more firms today in the latest move to open up the state-controlled industry in the world’s biggest phone market.
The firms, or virtual carriers, will be allowed to offer mobile services directly to consumers with their own brands and price packages, through purchasing bandwidth from China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom.
The new licenses were granted firms including Xiaomi and subsidiaries of Youku Tudou and Haier, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
It was the fourth virtual carrier license issuance, which covers new industries like Internet video, home appliance and mobile phone making.
Before that, the licensed firms included JD.com for online shopping and BusAP as a media provider on public transport.
The new license will help Youku Tudou to offer 600 million users more attractive and customized services, according to the country's biggest online video website.
