New Niu Niu concert with maestro

Program Code: 0909346130605006

Fourteen-year-old pianist Niu Niu will perform with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Tang Muhai on Saturday in a "Maestro and Genius" concert. The concert at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center will feature Prokofiev's "Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor" and Tchaikovsky's "Manfred."

Last Sunday Niu Niu staged a recital of wellknown works, such as Liszt's "Liebestraum," Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and Chopin's "Sonata No. 2." His third album "Lizst Transcriptions" was released in June.

Niu Niu, now studying at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, the United States, began studying the piano when he was 3 years old. He held his first recital when he was 6 and was recruited by the primary school attached to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music two years later. He was the youngest student at the time. In his first album in 2008 he played Mozart, in his second in 2010 he played Chopin, and this year it was Liszt.

"I think the three composers' work all happened to match my age when I played them," says Niu Niu. "For example, Liszt's work creates an unrestrained and carefree atmosphere, which is quite typical for a teenager like me."

Liszt's "La Campanella" is one of Niu Niu's favorites. "It is amazing to have the piano imitating the sound of a bell," says Niu Niu.
