YCIS Shanghai has top language program

Many international families who arrive in China for the first time share the same concern: How do students who have limited or no Chinese language experience develop Chinese fluency in class, and in daily life?

Yew Chung International School of Shanghai (YCIS Shanghai) has developed a strong reputation for Chinese language education, school officials said. The success of the Chinese program starts with textbooks, which are developed for non-native speakers, and are published by the Yew Chung Education Foundation (YCEF). The textbooks are designed to naturally integrate language use into daily conversation with topics that are important to students, including daily life, personal and social activities, and the world around us.

During class, activities are employed such as role-playing, drama, oral presentations, debates, games and designing posters to encourage use of the language in different contexts, school officials said.

Interesting assignments are created for students to conduct outside the classroom, such as arranging interviews with people in the community. Throughout the school year, students also have many opportunities to demonstrate their Chinese language skills in a public setting, with a Chinese Talent Show and external Chinese writing competitions.

Something new this year is a Chinese Studies course for all Year 1 to Year 9 students. The focus of this course is to help students better understand the local culture, through comparisons and reflections on Chinese and foreign cultures. This is important for language learning: By having a strong control of the language, students can deeply understand aspects of culture, and by having a more complete understanding of Chinese culture, students are able to learn more of the language.
