WHILE wriggling into a swimsuit is part of summer fun, doctors are advising Shanghai consumers not to enlist the help of parasitic worms to achieve the perfect beach body.
Capsules of roundworm eggs and adult worms are available at Taobao.com. Eggs cost between 300 (US$48.39) to 500 yuan and an adult sells for 1,200 yuan. They consume nutrition in the intestine of the host, leading to weight loss.
However, they could move into the liver, brain, eyes and other organs, warned Dr Liu Zhanju, director of digestive department at Shanghai No.10 People’s Hospital.
