More trouble for Metro as Line 8 conks out for hour

A POWER failure on the northern section of Metro Line 8 at around 10am yesterday caused a one-hour stoppage of services between Shiguang Road and Yanji Road M. stations.

It was the latest in a series of system failures on the city’s subway lines. On Friday, the Metro network was knocked out by a severe thunderstorm with the busiest section of Line 2 suspended for couple of hours after flood waters entered into the tunnel.

Services between People’s Square and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum stations were brought to a halt in the evening rush hour, adding to the chaos on the road, already jammed with traffic.

With the Metro network seen as a main pillar of the city’s public transportation, discussions raged over the recent failures. Some of them suggested that the designs of the entrance to some of the stations on Line 2 were to blame for the flooding.

But that argument was refuted by “metrofans”, an online club of Metro users, who said that most of the Line 2 station entrances are lifted by three footsteps, and it was impossible for rainwater to flow into the tunnel through the entrances along sidewalks.

However, the metrofans did point out that the subway’s operators should be more forthcoming in giving out details about the reasons for the malfunctions so as to avoid unnecessary speculation.

Meanwhile, there were also other issues as commuters lined up to claim their refunds for the Friday’s blowout.

Those affected by Metro delays for over 15 minutes are eligible for ticket refunds within seven working days. But one-way commuters will not have any proof of their travel as the tickets would be retrieved at the end of the journey.

It won’t be easy for those using transportation card as it stores records of only the last 10 trips.

Cardholders who do not claim a refund in time will have to go to the card companies and have a detailed list printed out to submit as proof before they can get their money back.
