Frenchman arrested for iPhone theft at bathhouse

A FRENCHMAN has been arrested for stealing an iPhone 4 from a public bathhouse, Putuo District People’s Procuratorate announced yesterday.

The 26-year-old Frenchman stole the iPhone from a bathhouse in Putuo District on November 12 when the owner, surnamed Liu, was sleeping in a room and left his cellphone  for charging on a couch with a blanket covered on it, prosecutors said.

Liu filed a complaint about  his missing iPhone, which costs about 3,400 yuan (US$560), with Putuo police the same day.

Police then found the Frenchman, who entered the room two hours later after Liu left it for charging.

He wrapped the iPhone and its cable in a towel and then walked to another room. He kept the phone under the couch mattress and put the cable in his locker, prosecutors said.

After being questioned by police, the Frenchman handed them over to police.

He denied he had stolen it, insisting it was his phone. Later he claimed the phone belonged to his friend.

Police said they had evidences from witnesses and surveillance videos to prove he had in fact stolen the phone.

The man was detained by police on November 13.
