Air quality worsens
Along with the heat, the city’s air quality has been deteriorating. Yesterday was the third consecutive day that the air quality index had reached above 150, or unhealthy.
An ozone pollution alert issued by Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center yesterday was the first this year after the new AQI evaluating system came into being on January 1, taking ozone into account.
Ozone can affect lung or heart function and irritate the respiratory system. Long-term exposure to ozone may even increase the risk of death from respiratory illness.
