Shanghai reports light pollution under calm winds

SHANGHAI reported light pollution this morning, with an air quality index exceeding 105, pushing it into the third level of the city's six-tier scale. Tiny PM 2.5 particles were the main pollutant.

According to Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, an accumulation of local pollutants and a lack of strong wind are to blame.

Light pollution began yesterday afternoon with the AQI reaching over 101 last night. The situation is likely to be eased tomorrow, and air quality is expected to be return to "good" in two days, the second level under the city's six-tier system.

Beijing had severe pollution today together with heavy haze, with the AQI reported to be 305 at around 10am, reaching the second-highest level of that city's six-tier scale. The Beijing meteorological observatory issued a yellow haze warning in the morning.

Surrounding areas like Tianjin and Heibei Province also suffered heavy haze. The situation is expected to be eased only after Wednesday.
