Late Metro trains for holiday eve

TRAINS will run an hour later on Metro lines 1 and 2 on Monday for passengers staying out  on the eve of the National Day holiday week.

However, Nanjing Road E. Station of Metro Line 2 will close at 4pm for the day, giving way to the float parade of the Shanghai Tourism Festival.

September 30 is the last working day before the holiday — a peak for the city’s transport system.

Some department stores are  organizing late night shopping events and many people also head out to socialize and admire holiday light displays.

The Metro operator says  trains along lines 1 and 2 will run at 10-minute intervals during the one-hour extension.

At People’s Square Station, the last Line 1 train to Fujin Road Station leaves at 0:01am (Tuesday) and at 0:05am for the service to Xinzhuang Station.

The last Line 2 train to Xujingdong Station is at 0:11am and at 0:17am heading to Pudong International Airport.

Passengers can transfer between the two lines at People’s Square Station during the extension.

Line 1 and Line 2 are the busiest lines in the city’s Metro system, each carrying more than 1 million passengers every day.

Shanghai’s 12 Metro lines saw a record 8.67 million riders on September 18, the last working day before the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Line 1 ferried 1.34 million passengers and Line 2 contributed 1.62 million.

The operator said the extension on Monday is an experiment and other holiday extensions will be considered.

Meanwhile, 11 bus services will be canceled from 3:30pm to 11:30pm between September 30 and October 3.

These include the No. 19, 23, 26, 64, 167, 576, 801, 805, 930, 935 and the City Sightseeing Bus No. 1.

Other lines, such as No. 20, 37, 65, 109, 146, will shorten or change their routes to lessen congestion in the downtown area during the holiday.
