Unhealthy habits boost gallstone cases in city

The incidence of gallstones in Shanghai has reached 10 percent due to unhealthy lifestyles like high-fat diets and skipping breakfast, local medical experts said.

Gallstones are more common among office workers, who often have a busy schedule and sometimes ignore a healthy diet. Doctors from Shanghai Hongkang Hospital said it received about 5,000 gallstone patients a year, two to three times the number of five years ago.

Gallbladder cancer is one of the leading digestive system cancers in the city, and there are three to four times more female than male patients.

"Not all gallstones will develop into gallbladder cancer, but over 90 percent of gallbladder cancer is accompanied by gallstones," said Dr Wang Jian from Shanghai Renji Hospital.
