City’s 1st large private hospital being built

CONSTRUCTION has been started on the city’s first private hospital in the largest, city-level category in Qingpu District at the new Yuanda Health Town, officials said.

Aside from the large not-for-profit facility, the project also will include an international hospital.

Shenzhen-based Boai Group is investing 3 billion yuan (US$484 million) in the project, which will be finished in 2017.

City health officials said the project, in suburban, semi-rural Qingpu District, is a good test of policies under which they have encouraged non-governmental entities to participate in providing health care.

Under the city’s health reform plans, private hospitals would provide 20 percent of the city’s total beds and services in 2015.

Xu Chunyu, director of the Qingpu District Health and Family Planning Commission, said the district is pleased to have such non-governmental investment in basic health care — the city-level hospital will offer general and basic services to the public.

"Such private social investment is encouraged," Xu said. "We will also provide more favorable policies like reducing restrictions on medical experts and allowing experts to work in more health facilities to help private hospitals grow."
