Bikers ‘Ride For Hope’ raise over 400,000 yuan

Charity riders reached Shanghai yesterday — the final destination of the 21-day, over 2,500-kilometer long “Ride For Hope” event, which was sponsored by 11 Shangri-La hotels.
Bikers set off from Futian Shangri-La in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, on November 16, passing through four Chinese provinces and 22 cities including Guangzhou, Fuzhou, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Ningbo.
The purpose of the event was to raise 120,000 yuan (US$19,728) to build 20 water cellars for around 20 families in a small village in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
In the end, the event had raised more than 400,000 yuan.
The six bikers arrived at G312 Huayuan Road in Shanghai at 12:30pm yesterday. They then proceeded on to Cao’an Highway, Longhua Road E., Lujiabang Road Ferry Pier, passing Pudong Road S. and Jinxiu Road before reaching the Kerry Hotel Pudong at 4:30pm. By that time, they had covered 2,724 kilometers on the bike.
Nicholas Smith, resident manager of Shangri-La Futian, Shenzhen, and one of the riders, lost around 10 kilograms during the gruelling three-week journey.
“We had an amazing journey and I really enjoyed riding,” Smith said. “I came up with the idea of ‘Ride for Hope’ in January 2013. We want to give back to the community as much as we can.”
The villagers in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region moved from the mountains to live along the newly built road. They used to collect precious rain water from the stone caves. But now with their only access to water gone, they urgently needed to build water cellars that could store water collected during the rainy season. Each cellar for the water costs 6,000 yuan.
The whole charity campaign has so far raised more than 400,000 yuan, according to Angel Mao, Shangri-La’s director of public relations, South China.
“The activity was well received and supported by both individuals and companies and organizations,” she said.
“The exact amount that we raise will be revealed soon,” Mao said.
Shanghai Daily, an English-language newspaper, and a joint sponsor of the “Ride for Hope,” raised 3,600 yuan by selling the iDEALShanghai/Shangri-La Charity Package on its official website.
