Unilever starts 3rd plant and keen on 4th factory

Unilever started construction of its third manufacturing plant in China yesterday in Meishan, Sichuan Province, and the company is studying other provinces for a fourth factory as it seeks to tap growing demand in China.
In the initial phase, the laundry powder plant in Meishan will have an investment of 300 million yuan (US$48.4 million). The plant will boast an annual capacity of 200,000 tons with industrial output worth 2 billion yuan after it becomes operational in early 2015.
The plant is expected to become one of the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods company’s biggest factories worldwide. Unilever, which also has two manufacturing plants in Anhui Province and Tianjin, is looking at several provinces for its fourth plant.
“Unilever is also currently considering several provinces including Guangdong, Fujian and Hunan to locate its fourth manufacturing site,” Zeng Xiwen, vice president for Unilever North Asia, said at a media briefing after the ground-breaking ceremony for the Meishan plant.
Unilever, which expects China sales to increase by double digits this year, aims to boost its total sales in the country to 50 billion yuan by 2020 from 16-18 billion yuan currently.
