Hainan’s duty-free sales up

The island province of Hainan has seen a surge in offshore duty-free shopping, with total sales revenue of 6.3 billion yuan (US$1.03 billion) between April 2011 and this month.

In that period, Hainan welcomed over 2.51 million tourist arrivals, and 8.96 million items were sold in its two offshore duty-free stores in the provincial capital of Haikou and Sanya, data released yesterday by Haikou Customs showed.

The province has seen booming tourism since the offshore duty-free program started in April 2011 on a trial basis.

Individual tourists and local residents aged 16 or above can enjoy duty exemptions on certain imported items worth not over 8,000 yuan before flying to other destinations within China.
