Not enough train drivers causes 100 service cancellations

A lack of drivers for Queensland Rail has led to the cancellation of more than 100 train services in and around Brisbane today, TransLink says.

Trains on almost all lines face some kind of cut service today, the first of which was the 7:25am Ferny Grove to Park Road service.

Dozens of other services have been cancelled throughout the day, mostly outside of peak periods.

Commuters on the Springfield line between Springfield Central and Darra, and those on the Redcliffe Peninsula line between Petrie and Kippa-Ring will be moved to buses after 7:00pm.

TransLink spokesman Simon Cook said the government agency was doing its best to manage the disruption, caused by a lack of drivers.

"It really is about staffing for trains. Not enough drivers to run the trains that the need to run today," he said.

"We've been working the last 24 hours to make sure we have busses to replace trains on affected lines and make sure we communicate every single bit of disruption to customers so they can plan their journeys."

Mr Cook said TransLink was informed about the disruption by Queensland Rail at 4:45pm on Thursday.

He said he was unsure how many drivers were unavailable.

"A driver will do several trips a day. If there's one driver not available that will impact several services," he said.

Earlier this morning a Queensland Rail spokeswoman apologised to customers for the inconvenience

"Alterations have been planned to minimise disruption for customers as best as possible, with most occurring outside of peak periods," the spokeswoman said.

"We apologise to customers for the inconvenience and ask that they check the TransLink website for the latest information."

She said an updated statement would be released later today.

Services are expected to return to normal on Saturday.
