New half-day public holidays in NT

Tuesday, 25 Oct 2016 08:03:20 | Xavier La Canna

New laws expected for the Northern Territory will see two half-day public holidays introduced on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

It is understood the Labor Government will introduce the legislation to parliament today.

Under the scheme there will be extra penalty rates for people who work between 7pm and midnight on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve.

The NT Government would not confirm the move, but told Nine News Darwin it was considering a range of measures to boost population growth and support job creation.

Hoteliers unhappy

Chief executive of the NT branch of the Australian Hotels Association, Des Crowe, said he expected some businesses would close their doors on the two days if the laws came into effect.

"Some of them close, some of them reduce staffing and some of them reduce services," Mr Crowe said.

He said the wage of some workers will increase from $23.64 per hour, to $52.00 per hour, during the hours declared a public holiday.

The South Australian Government has already introduced half-day public holidays on the same days.

Mr Crowe said the change in SA was prompted by efforts to have late-night trading allowed in a mall, but there were no similar issues in the NT.

"It is not just about what goes on in the CBD, this is Territory-wide," he told 105.7 ABC Darwin.

The move comes a day after CommSec yesterday released a report which showed the NT economy was losing momentum partly due to weak population growth.

It found the population only grew 0.4 per cent in a three-month period, down 76.3 per cent compared to the decade average.

Unemployment in the NT was down markedly on the decade average, to 3.4 per cent
