Traffic campaign to run indefinitely

THE current crackdown on traffic offenses will continue indefinitely, the city’s vice mayor said yesterday.
“People shouldn’t assume that it will be dropped in three months’ time,” Bai Shaokang, who is also head of the public security bureau, told listeners to a radio phone-in show.
“We are committed to fighting illegality on the roads over the long term and until the situation improves,” he said.
Since the launch of the citywide crackdown on March 25, police officers have dealt with more than 2.6 million offenses, but they won’t be taking their foot off the gas any time soon, Bai said.
As well as their plans to instal a further 18,000 automatic ticketing cameras on streets within the Outer Ring Road — there are only 3,500 such machines in place at present — police hope to extend their use of state-of-the-art technology to catch offenders, he said.
“A system that was installed recently at a busy crossroads recorded over 1,000 traffic offenses in just a few days, and 200 people were punished,” he said.
“We hope to use it on lots more streets in the near future.”
The public security bureau is also looking at ways to expand the scope of another recently introduced system that allows motorists to report offenses by sending in footage from their dashcams, Bai said.
“We have received more than 1,000 video clips since the system went live last week. So now we’re trying to find ways to let people upload videos and pictures captured on their smartphones,” he said.
In response to callers’ complaints that the crackdown had failed to relieve congestion, Bai appealed for patience.
“People should get used to slow traffic in Shanghai because the ever-growing number of vehicles on the road means the congestion problem can never be totally resolved,” he said.
“But reducing the amount of offenses will help the traffic to move faster.”
