Offending drivers pay price for not seeing drone

BAD luck yesterday afternoon for motorists using the wrong lanes on the G1501 expressway at Gaodongxin Road — 13 of them were spotted by a drone.
The drone, hovering at a height of 30 meters above ground took videos with its camera with a high resolution zoom lens for the police to later use as evidence against the offenders, such as truck drivers using car only lanes.
Pudong traffic police said that by using a drone, they have caught 76 traffic violations on the city’s expressways since June 1, becoming the first police force in Shanghai to use a drone for traffic law enforcement.
Gao Yifei, an official with Pudong traffic police, said the drone makes law enforcement on expressways more efficient.
“It’s especially useful on expressways because it’s hard for police officers to be patrolling among the busy traffic all the time and the traffic cameras are not so versatile as drones in gathering evidence such as car plates,” he said.
A drone can take off from a space within two square meters on the ground, which makes it easy to fly it from any spot, Gao added.
Currently four traffic police officers from Pudong have acquired licenses to fly drones, and training will be provided to more in the future, he said.
“We will potentially use the drones to take evidence of car accidents on elevated roads or expressways so as to more efficiently solve such accidents.”
