5,000 heavy polluters flout ring road ban
MORE than 5,000 “yellow-label” — or heavily polluting vehicles — have been detected entering the city’s Outer Ring areas during the first two weeks of a ban.
These heavy polluters were banned from the Outer Ring Road (S20) on July 1. Drivers found breaking the rule face a fine of 200 yuan (US$32) and a 3-point deduction from their license. According to traffic police, more than 5,000 vehicles were caught violating the ban by 81 surveillance cameras along the outer, middle and inner ring roads during the first two weeks of the ban. Police said they will add 100 more surveillance facilities around the city this year to strengthen enforcement. According to Shanghai transport authority’s plan, the restricted area for heavily polluting vehicles will be extended to the suburban loop (G1501) from next April.
