Smoggy days ahead for city as mercury drops further

BRACE for a cold front over the weekend that will drag the temperatures down into single digits, weather forecasters said yesterday.
But the cold front is also expected to bring with it another round of pollution.
There were few drizzles in the city yesterday with overcast skies and light pollution. Due to the influence of the cold front, the sky is expected to clear up today. The dry and cloudy conditions will last until tomorrow before the rains make a return on Sunday.
The cold air moving into Shanghai will cause some smog today and tomorrow.
The mercury will drop to 3 degrees Celsius tomorrow in downtown areas and even lower in the outskirts of the city. The low will mainly range from 4 to 6 degrees Celsius until next week and the high is expected to be between 8 and 10 degrees.
It will drizzle again on Sunday with heavy rains expected on Monday.
It will generally taper off on Tuesday but the gray skies will still be with us.
The recent smoggy weather has triggered a boom in the sales of air purifiers. Major electronics’ chains and e-commerce giants have reported an increase in sales by as much as 300 percent in the city.
Some of the products of popular brands are out of stock.
At a Yolo outlet, one of the largest home appliances chains, near Zhongshan Park, a sales clerk of a Japanese electronics brand said the air purifier sales had soared since last month.
“Some types of air purifiers are out of stock, especially the smaller and cheaper ones,” the sales clerk, surnamed Li, said. “The one we sell best is the series with ‘Nanoe’ technology which can kill bacteria, remove smells and even drive away PM2.5 particles.”
But most of the customers prefer cheap ones that cost between 1,000 and 3,000 yuan.
“On one particular day, the sales of air purifiers at this Yolo outlet reached 100,000.”
Another clerk at the nearby Gome store said the air purifiers have been selling steadily since last October.
Online retailer JD.com said the sales reached a peak between mid and late December in Shanghai.
The increase was a staggering 300 percent from the same period in 2014.
