'X-Men' sequel eclipses 'Alice' during US Memorial Day weekend

Superhero sequel "X-Men: Apocalypse" debuted as the top movie at North American box-offices this Memorial day weekend with ticket sales of US$65 million, industry figures showed on Sunday.

In the United States, the three-day holiday weekend -- the unofficial start of summer -- is popular with moviegoers, and cinemas generally do a booming business, although box office watchers remarked that ticket sales this year have been uncharacteristically light.

Disney's "Alice Through the Looking Glass" opened in the number two spot, selling US$28.1 million in tickets.

"The Angry Birds Movie" was third with US$18.7 million.

Another comic book-themed flick, "Captain America: Civil War," was fourth with US$15.1 million, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

"Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising," grossed US$9.1 million for fifth place.

Rounding out the top 10 were:

-- "The Jungle Book" (US$6.9 million)

-- "The Nice Guys" (US$6.3 million)

-- "Money Monster" (US$4.2 million)

-- "Love and Friendship" (US$2.5 million)

-- "Zootopia"  (US$831,000)
