US tour bus crash kills 1 Chinese, injures 15

A tour bus carrying 18 tourists from China overturned near George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate after colliding head-on with a passenger car on Tuesday afternoon, leaving one person dead and 15 injured.

US Park Police spokeswoman Sergeant Anna Rose said 15 people were taken to hospitals following the crash; three of them suffered critical injuries.

The dead passenger was a 62-year old women from Jiangsu Province and two of the most badly injured are female visitors from Shanghai, the Shanghai Tourism Administration said yesterday.

The accident happened on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Virginia around 5pm local time yesterday, when the medium-sized bus overturned after it was hit by a small vehicle, said Shanghai UTour International Travel Service Co, which organized the tour.

The two injured women from Shanghai, who are 62 and 35 years old, are in intensive care at Inova Fairfax Hospital, according Lu Jianming, assistant general manager of the travel agency.

Several tourists who were slightly injured left the hospital after being treated, said Lu.

The small vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction when the driver moved into the oncoming lane to pass vehicles. It collided with the front wheel of the bus, causing its driver to lose control, Lu told Shanghai Daily.

The bus driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs, police said.

The dead woman’s relatives flew to the US yesterday afternoon, and the families of the two injured women will fly out as soon as their visas are processed, according to the agency.

All members of the tour group purchased insurance, and the provider has contacted the families of the victims, Lu said.

Local police told Xinhua news agency at the scene that after the accident, some drivers stopped to help rescue the passengers trapped inside.

Chinese consular officials arrived at the scene to offer assistance after the accident.

The tour’s 10-day itinerary included the east coast and Chicago. The tour group was scheduled to return on Saturday, but may return earlier.
