Hatched! Baby bald eagle brings glee to millions in US

A baby bald eagle finally hatched on Friday in Washington, its first few moments in the world caught on camera for a raptured audience who had been on tenterhooks for days.

"Eaglecam," set up at the National Arboretum in the US capital, has been a huge hit, capturing the critical moment when the tiny ball of gray feathers broke out. A second egg is yet to hatch but could do so at any moment.

A pair of mated bald eagles, named "Mr. President" and "The First Lady" --  the bald eagle is America's national symbol -- in October 2014 chose for their nest a tall Tulip Poplar tree at the arboretum.

"The DC 'Eaglecam' has had over two million views in the past month, and hundreds of thousands of people have been watching over the past days," said Julia Cecere, of the American Eagle Foundation, an NGO.

Now all eyes are on the second egg and viewers were encouraged to tweet #dceaglecam as news spread of the successful first birth, after what for some has been a long and excruciating wait since the hatching process began on Wednesday.

"Ah! I saw baby eaglet's face!" tweeted @chouinardphoto.

Another Twitter user posted a photo of a group of children celebrating the hatching in front of a giant screen showing the big moment.

"Mr. President" and "The First Lady" raised one eaglet successfully in 2015.
