THE annual Comic Con Experience opened in Sao Paulo, Brazil, over the weekend, drawing tens of thousands of fans of comic books, gaming, and all other streams of pop culture, eager to see their favorite heroes in action, and to get a preview of what is to come.

Dubbed "the greatest geek convention" in Latin America, the Comic Con Experience in Sao Paulo continues to unite huge numbers of global pop-culture fanatics.

Some 20,000 people are expected to visit the event during its four-day opening, from Dec. 4–7. According to Comic Con organizers, the event's appeal is its diversity.

"Comic Con events have been taking place since 1960, but Brazil has never seen an event with the same scale and purpose as this one. Comic Con events nowadays bring together much more than just the comic books that were seen at the origins of the event. It involves all the main areas of pop-culture, with cinema, TV, comic books of course, games, collectables, everything of fantasy and fiction," said Ivan Freita Da Costa, Comic-Con organizer.

In addition to seeing the original comic strips that inspired many major superhero franchises, guests also got a sneak-peek at future releases.

There will be an exclusive preview of the next Hobbit film, "The Battle of Five Armies", at the event, with a special appearance from Thorin actor, Richard Armitage.

This mixture of attractions caused great excitement.

"I saw lots of really cool things here, like superheroes and new films that are coming out soon," said Caio Saraiva, a visitor.

Guests also relished the opportunity to meet like-minded people.

"Is is an enormous pop culture event, which represents something very important for nerds, but it is not only for nerds, but people who like culture in general, which is very good because it reunites lots of people with the same tastes in one place. You can make a lot of friends here, it is a lot of fun," said a visitor named Bruna Silva.

The Sao Paulo Comic Con runs through Sunday.
