China committed to path of peace

PRESIDENT Xi Jinping said yesterday that turmoil at home or abroad are not in China’s interests as its bitter past has shown, pledging that Beijing will never stray from its path of peaceful development.

Speaking at the Boao Forum for Asia, which is ongoing in south China’s Hainan Province, Xi said the country is ready to sign more friendship treaties with its neighbors and proposed holding dialogue among Asian civilizations.

“What China most needs is a harmonious and stable domestic environment, and a peaceful and tranquil international environment,” he told the audience, which included the leaders of Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Nepal.

“Any turmoil does not accord with the basic interests of the Chinese people,” he said.

“China has in the past 100 years or more suffered turmoil and war, and the Chinese people will never impose upon other countries or people the tragic history our own people have experienced,” Xi said.

“Any country trying to use force to achieve its own development goals will in the end only fail,” he said.

“I’m willing to use this opportunity to repeat that on the path ahead, China will unswervingly develop peacefully.”

Xi said China should focus not only on economic growth, reiterating its push for a more sustainable expansion.

The government has set a growth target of about 7 percent for this year, down from a 7.5 percent goal in 2014 and the slowest rate in a quarter-century. But Xi said 7 percent would still be impressive and be a big driver of momentum.

China’s economy is resilient and has much potential, which allows for a host of policy tools, he said.

The theme of this year’s Boao forum is: “Asia’s New Future: Toward a Community of Common Destiny.”
