All saved from stranded S. Korean cruise ship

A South Korean cruise ship ran aground Tuesday morning in waters off the country's southwestern coast, and all people aboard the ship were rescued, Yonhap News Agency and YTN reported citing the Coast Guard.

The 171-ton ship Vacance hit a submerged rock in waters off Hongdo Island, South Jeolla Province at around 9:10am local time. Aboard the vessel were 109 people including 104 passengers and five crew members.

The Coast Guard, which received a first distress call at about 9:14am local time, saved all the people some 30 minutes later, with the help of fishing boats sailing near the scene.

The cruise ship with a maximum capacity of 355 people left the Hongdo port earlier in the morning for a cruise around the island. The vessel sails around the island three times a day.

The maritime accident came more than five months after the ferry Sewol capsized and sank off the southwestern island of Jindo in April, which claimed lives of more than 300 people.
