Woman Denies Live Video Taken at Palace Museum

A young woman has ended up at the center of a heated debate in China after she claimed to have escaped from security guards' checks and stayed at the Palace Museum overnight to do live broadcast.

Her video on live-streaming platform Huajiao during the May Day holiday was later posted on Weibo by some netizens.

In the video, a woman can be seen wearing an ancient costume and broadcasting in a building like the Palace Museum. Things like an emperor's chair and a golden screen also showed up in the video.

After the video circulated online, many netizens criticized her behavior and said it was a blasphemy to Chinese traditional culture. Some web users praised her for her courage, while a large number of people doubted the authenticity of her live-stream as many details showed she was not at the Palace Museum.

The video also caught the attention of the Palace Museum, who soon launched an investigation. The surveillance footages excluded the possibility that live broadcast was taken inside the museum at night.

The woman, surnamed Zhou, told Beijing Youth Daily on May 4, she didn't broadcast at the Palace Museum but in a movie and television studio in Huairou, a northern suburb of Beijing.

She felt regretted and apologized for her behavior. "I just wanted to play a joke with netizens, but haven't expected to make such a big splash."

She also denied it was a publicity stunt and said "I'm not an actress. Why do I need to do so？"

By now, her "night broadcast at the Palace Museum" has been deleted from the platform.
