On the night of May 31, a day before the Children's Day, a policeman in Nanjing caught a thief stealing a chicken thigh at a supermarket. But after learning the reasons behind this, the policeman couldn't help sharing the story on WeChat which turned out to be a big help for the mother thief.

Pan Shunqun, a police officer at Nanjing's Xuanwu District, received a call on May 31 night that a thief was caught at a nearby supermarket. On arriving at the scene, Pan found the thief to be a woman who stole a chicken thigh, some corn and soybean and a children's book, Modern Express reported.

The woman surnamed Liu confessed to police that she stole those things for her daughter, who was undergoing treatment for her kidney disease.

Liu said she had a pair of twin daughters both suffering from kidney problems. She took the one whose condition was more severe to the Nanjing General Hospital for treatment.

Unable to afford the hospitalization fee, Liu takes her daughter for treatment at the hospital during daytime. At night, she brought her back to a 2-square-meter room she took on rent.

"I stole these things for my kid, not for myself." As for the book, that was a Children's Day gift for her daughter, Liu said.

Liu's husband left her because of their daughters' disease and she works at a waste recycling station on 40-50 yuan per day.

Liu told reporters:

Today is the Children's Day. Yesterday my kid told me that she wanted some gifts -- a chicken thigh to eat. It costs 7 yuan at the supermarket. She also asked for the Three Character Classic children's book, which all her classmates have except her. I always had to tell her to wait.

Yesterday I went to the supermarket to buy some corn and soybean. Doctors said these were good for her kidney. I also saw the chicken thigh and the book but realized I only had 5 yuan with me.  I put them down several times before I could pick up. In the end I couldn't help...

After getting to know her condition, policeman Pan wrote a post about it and shared it on his WeChat, calling others to donate for Liu. The post went viral and many people were moved by the story. Some donated money through WeChat, and some brought Children's Day gift for Liu's daughter.

By 8:20pm yesterday, Liu received more than 300,000 yuan donation.

Wish Liu and her daughters all the best!
