A Weibo post explaining why police ID cards also carry information on blood types has gone viral online.

Lin Xiaoming, a graduate from People's Public Security University of China, wrote on Weibo on November 25 that he learned from his predecessors that blood type information on police ID cards would be useful for first aid in case that any policeman gets injured.

Lin said he had mixed feelings after learning about the reason. He attached a photo of his police ID card with blood type information on it.

The official Weibo account of Beijing Public Security Bureau re-twittered Lin’s post on Monday and added more information. According to the post, policemen are not allowed to smile when taking formal photos in uniform since the photos might be used as their portraits of the deceased if they sacrificed their lives.

Last year, a total of 438 policemen died while on duty and 4,599 others were wounded or disabled, according to the statistics from the Ministry of Public Security.

Quite a few netizens were shocked to learn for the first time about it. Some commented as following:

“I feel like crying. Salute to the police!”

“Some people are struggling for our peaceful life.”

“Policeman is a profession with highest mortality rate in peaceful time.”

“As a wife of a policeman, I hate to learn about the truth.”

“I have already been prepared for it the moment I decided to be a policeman.”

“You can find a soldier’s blood type information from their inside pocket.”
