Doctor Showing Off Highly Priced Down Coat Becomes Controversial Online

A doctor in Chengdu, capital city of southwest China’s Sichuan Province, recently became a controversial figure online after he posted photos of his new down coat worth more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,470) on Weibo on December 4.

Some netizens said it was inappropriate for a certified doctor to flaunt his wealth while others thought showing one’s ability in earning money was not a big deal.

Ren Liming, in the mid of the hot debate, is an associate chief physician in urology at a top-graded hospital in Chengdu. He later disclosed his possessions and income on Weibo.

Ren told Chengdu Business News that he spends over 200,000 yuan on clothing annually and considers it to be a way of life. He also said that he has three properties and is considering purchasing the fourth.

Ren said his annual income can reach more than 1 million yuan, including earnings from sideline jobs such as giving lectures and investing in firms.

He said he’d like to set an example for young doctors and show that they can live a decent life and at the same time make contributions to the society. He noted that a respectable income might also help alleviate tension between doctors and patients because kickbacks will not be that attractive to doctors. In his opinion, making money in a proper way is nothing shameful at all.
