A heart-broken mom has devoted herself to helping others since her son died of a cardiac arrest last year.

The mother, Xin Changzheng, from Fuzhou, capital of Fujian Province, has dedicated all of her spare time to public benefit activities since her beloved son died, and draws comfort, serenity and calmness from helping others.

The 21-year-old boy, Gao Yuan, a student at the Xiamen Academy of Arts and Design, Fuzhou University, was good at sports but suffered a heart attack when travelling on a public bus. It took more than 10 minutes before an ambulance arrived and, in that time, nobody on the bus tried to help him. And by the time the boy got to the hospital it was too late and doctors could not save his life.

"If someone had tried to punch him in the chest, it's possible that his heart would beat again," said the boy’s heart-broken mother, who is an obstetrics and gynecology doctor. "My husband and I have saved many lives, but we couldn't save our own child. Many lives pass away, like our child, because no one knows how to do first aid. We don't want such an incident to happen again, so we joined a public welfare campaign to popularize cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)."

Xin, whose husband is also a doctor, went to her son's university to offer CPR training, hoping more students can master the rescue skills and save lives.

An educational fund in the name of her son has been set up at the university, which will help five poor students every year with a grant of 3,000 yuan per person. The fund will continue for the next 10 years and will provide 50 students with financial aid amounting to 150,000 yuan.

Furthermore, Xin launched several large-scale science popularization lectures on the university campuses such as: "Care for women, away from harm" and "Hand-in-hand to battle against AIDS, start from me."

Xin, who has been a doctor for 30 years, added: "My special profession enables me to help others. Then I'll try my best to do what I can do."
