University Launches Dish with Funny Name
The canteen at Hunan University has launched a new dish named “lanshou xianggu” (blue skinny mushroom) on October 19.
The vegetarian dish, which costs 3.5 yuan, attracted many students and sold out in just half an hour.
Lanshou xianggu, literally “blue skinny mushroom,” is the latest Internet buzzword in China. It comes from a video clip in which a young man in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, expressed his bad feelings.
Due to his strong accent, "nanshou (feel sad) xiangku (wanna cry)” became "lanshou xianggu."
Li Jianhong, director of the canteen, said the major ingredients in the dish are mushroom and broccoli, which are high in nutrition. But Li also admitted that the canteen launched the dish also in the hope of keeping up with the trend.
This is not the first time that special menus have been launched in high schools across China.
Last month, Xiaoshan No. 2 Vocational School in Hangzhou launched a dish dedicated to the Mid-Autumn Festival — stirfried mooncake with tomatoes.
The canteen in Anqing Normal University in Anhui Province used to offer dishes that combine ingredients not traditionally cooked together, including orange mixed with chicken, corn kernels with grapes, apple mixed with meat and grape with tomatoes.
Canteen in South China Agricultural University in Guangdong Province even made a dish called steamed egg with tomatoes.
