Thousands Of Pigs To Be Rescued During Heavy Rainfall

Thousands of swine are waiting to be rescued in Liu’an city, Shucheng County of Anhui Province, after soaking in floodwaters for over 20 hours.

Provinces and regions around the Yangtze River basin, including Liu’an, have suffered heavy rainstorms over recent days.

At one point, floodwaters reached knee-height at a pig farm owned by Anhui’s Kangyuan Eco-Agricultural Development Co Ltd, a situation that threatens the lives of almost 3,000 pigs inside.

Staff from the farm also say that an earlier online post saying 6,000 swine were involved was not true.

Rescue work kicked off as floodwaters lowered Tuesday morning. Authorities from the city’s animal control center removed breeding sows and boars to higher ground.

Pigs weighing over 80kg will be slaughtered while those little pigs under 80 will be removed to another farm nearby. The pigs will be placed under quarantine inspection on the spot.

The entire rescue operation is expected to last two or three days, as heavy rains were forecast on Tuesday.

China's meteorological authority renewed its orange alert for heavy rain in the south and southwest of the country on Monday, saying heavy rains would hit the provinces of Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guizhou, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region until Tuesday morning.

There are many stunning pictures depicting the severity of the flooding.

Mingtang Stadium, a landmark in Ezhou, Hubei Province, looked like a swimming pool on Saturday as it was overwhelmed after heavy rain.

Some fish were even decapitated by strong torrents as the Geheyan Hydropower Station discharged floods on Saturday afternoon in Changyang County in Hubei Province.

The feet of a soldier turned pale and numb after he stood in waist-deep floods for over 30 hours in Anqing City, Huaining County of Anhui Province to combat floods. A photo of his feet when he sat for a rest went viral recently.

Over a four-day period, heavy rain has killed 93 people in 11 Chinese provincial regions. Another 19 have been reported missing.

Continuous rainfall since June 30 has destroyed 22,000 houses and forced 726,000 people to relocate to provinces including Jiangsu, Hubei, Henan and Sichuan, the Ministry of Civil Affairs announced on Monday.
