Petty bus company pays injured woman compensation in one yuan coins

A spiteful bus company who procrastinated over paying compensation to a passenger injured by one of its vehicles has eventually settled on reimbursement - in coins.

The woman, surnamed Mou, was sitting in the last row of a bus when it was hit by another vehicle, owned by the Dalian Yuanchen Passenger Transportation Company last December.

Mou, and several other passengers, were injured as a result of the rear-end collision and claimed for compensation after traffic police said the Yuanchen bus company were liable for the accident.

Mou was diagnosed by her doctor as having multiple soft-tissue damage to the waist. The hospital bill to repair the damage was almost 7,000 yuan. The cheeky bus company asked her to pay the hospital bill and promised reimbursement at a later date. But when Mou pursued the bus company for compensation they always dragged their feet and made her wait.

"In half a year, I've visited the company more than 10 times," she said.

After six months, the bus company eventually agreed to hand over the money they owed and astonished the victim of the accident when they told her it would be paid out in small change.

Unsure of whether they were telling the truth, Mou and two of her relatives, went to pick up the cash on Saturday. Sure enough the bus company delivered its promise to pay out in small coins and they handed over coins weighing over 40 kilograms.

"I thought they might give me notes, but unexpectedly they were all one-yuan coins," said an astonished Mou.

Mou added that the company paid her in coins to deliberately spite her after negotiations became unpleasant over the amount of reimbursement she would receive.

The bus company staff admitted they had given Mou the money in coins but defended their actions. A company spokesman said: "We did inform her in advance and she didn't object to it."
