You'll Do A Double-Take With These Freshmen Pairs
This summer, Tongji University — one of the most prestigious universities in China — enrolled two freshmen with a same name, Su Yuxuan.
The two were also classmates in senior high school, High School Attached to Hunan Normal University.
Now, after taking the same flight to Shanghai, they are ready to embrace the challenges and possibilities Tongji University has to offer.
“We achieved the same score in the college entrance exam, and we both applied for Nanjing University and Tongji University without discussing our plans beforehand. That’s amazing,” said the bespectacled and younger Su Yuxuan.
Their given names, Yuxuan, both originate from the Chinese term “qi yu xuan ang,” which refers to a man with refined disposition.
Still in junior high school, they heard of each other on the roll of honor, where they were both listed.
In senior high school they became acquainted with each other as classmates.
Sharing a name was sometimes troublesome. Their classmates and teachers made habitual mistakes about their names. For example, one reported the loss of his school card leading to withdrawal of the other’s card. Later they became known as “Su the elder” and “Su the younger.”
The two boys differ though in their interests and temperament. “Su the elder” is more of an introvert, while “Su the younger” is gregarious.
Meanwhile, freshmen Yuan Jiao and Yuan Yan, both students at Nanjing University of the Arts, have their own special relationship. They’re twins.
The sisters have shared much throughout their lives. They both fell in love with the guzheng, a stringed Chinese, when they were seven. When they were ten, they made their debut on the stage.
They both reached the highest level in guzheng by the time they graduated from primary school.
In high school, they applied at NJA to pursue their music studies. During the entrance exam, they performed a single composition.
They have a long history of being mistaken by their teachers, who have identified them by placing them.
The twins also share taste in clothes.
Yet, the girls say their dispositions are different.
Yuan Jiao, the older sister, is the quiet one compared to the vivacious younger Yuan Yan.
