Care for what left-behind children actually need— The Estée Lauder Companies visited Jinzhai to help them scientifically

THE Estée Lauder Companies and China Youth Development Foundation recently visited Jinzhai County in Anhui Province to check up on left-behind children and their tutors who were trained with the foundation’s support.

The company went to six local primary schools where the highest number of left-behind children are enrolled.

The volunteers found out more about children’s real needs and to communicate with tutors on the project’s implementation.

The Estée Lauder Companies’ staff and volunteers brought customized “childhood-painting” postcards for children to paint their ideal childhood.

The company also donated stationery and sports equipment.

Last year, the first Estée Lauder Companies teacher training workshop, offering guidance on teaching left-behind children, was held in Shanghai, attracting more than 60 teachers from Jinzhai and Sichuan Province. One year later, the company revisited Jinzhai to examine the training result and further understand children’s needs in order to better adjust the caring plan in years to come.

Before the training targeted at teachers, the company did a field survey on the left-behind children’s needs in cooperation with Youth Development Foundation and Tsinghua University and found that tutors could play a vital role in facilitating these children’s development. The company hopes to get actual feedbacks through this revisiting trip and continue the activity with scientific projects.

At the feedback workshop, tutors introduced the activities they worked out after their training and discussed the problems they met. They set up counseling rooms, added outdoor activities and interest lessons to make children feel less lonely. With the help of the Internet and videos, they tried to establish better communications between parents and their children. However, many problems have yet to be solved, including a shortage of teachers and inadequate care by grandparents. Compared to their peers who grow up with their parents, left-behind children have better financial but less mental care.

In “paint ideal childhood” activity, most kids wrote words of love and miss on their painting postcards elaborately designed by the company’s staffs and volunteers. They are clever and polite, making people feel more compassionate, said one of the volunteers who took part in the postcard-designing process.

Kuang Jiawei achieved a good grade in the first The Estée Lauder Companies National College Creativity Competition and attended the recent trip to Jinzhai. In his journal, he reflected on his previous research on the left-behind children and found that it was not enough to really understand them. Before going to Jinzhai, he thought the key to solve this problem is economic development; but the recent trip made him understand that love and good care are more important, he said. The company’s social responsibility and commitment to take care of the left-behind children touched him profoundly.

The government took more concern about the left-behind children in recent years, dedicated to satisfy children’s real needs to help them grow up. Premier Li Keqiang also demands priority of this issue. The Estée Lauder Companies will keep focusing on these children and improve activities to give them what they really want.
