Plenty to cheer for at Qizhong Tennis Center

SHANGHAI Daily interactive event

If you are a tennis fan, you can’t miss this year’s Shanghai Rolex Masters, one of the nine ATP 1000 tournaments in the world and the only one in Asia. It was named ATP Masters 1000 Tournament of the Year from 2009 to 2013.

Every October, the world’s top tennis players rally at the Qizhong Tennis Center to give their fans a series of intense and thrilling matches. Aside from the thrill and excitement of their matches, the spectators can also visit the exhibition area of the tennis center.

Shanghai Daily has been covering and supporting Shanghai Rolex Masters for many years. At this year’s event, Shanghai Daily will cooperate with All Tennis and iTennisWorld magazine to create a unique booth “Tennis Paradise” for all the ATP fans to share their love of the game. People can wear VR gear to play tennis or take photos with posters of the stars.

The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Games

The grand slam tournaments, also called majors, are the four most important annual tennis events. They offer the most ranking points and prize money. Grand Slam events include the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon Championships and US Open. The champion of the four games can earn 2,000 ranking points.

The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 is one of the nine tournaments held annually in Europe, North America and Asia. It is the most prestigious showdown in men’s tennis after the four Grand Slams and the ATP World Tour Finals. The World Tour Masters 1000 is held in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid, Toronto, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris. There are also ATP 500 and ATP 250 games at lower levels.

Results in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events earn players more world ranking points than regular tournaments, though not as many as Grand Slam events and the year-end ATP World Tour Finals.

Match details

The singles is a 56 draw, which means the top eight seeds get first round byes. It is elimination from the first round. There are four wildcards determined by the tournament directors and seven qualifiers who come through a 28 qualifying draw. In doubles, it is a 24 draw, which means the eight seeds have first round byes. It is also elimination from the first round with 99 matches — 55 in singles, 23 in doubles and 21 in qualifying.

In singles, each match is the best of three tie-break sets. Each set is the first to six games with an advantage of two games such as 6-4. However if the score reaches 6-6 in a set, a 12-point tie-break is played. A player can only win the set if he wins the tie-break by two clear points. The farthest a set can go on the ATP World Tour before a tie-break is 7-5.

In doubles, the first two sets are the same as in singles but if the match is locked at one set all the teams will play a match tie-break — the first to ten points with an advantage of two clear points.

The only Masters 1000 series in Asia

The Shanghai Rolex Masters is the only ATP World Tour Masters 1000 series staged in Asia. Since it was first held in 2009, the Shanghai event has been awarded the annual best ATP Masters 1000 tournament five years in a row.

According to the rules, the world’s top 20 men players must all attend the tournament and the world’s top 44 players are on the entry list in case of injuries or other unexpected problems.

This year’s Shanghai Rolex Masters takes place from October 8 to 16 again at the Shanghai Qizhong Tennis Center.

The world No. 1 player Novak Djokovic, Olympic winner Andy Murray, US Open champion Stan Wawrinka, Spanish legend Rafael Nadal, and many other stars will compete for prize money in the Shanghai tournament.

Prize Money

Total prize money for the Shanghai Rolex Masters is US$7,655,640.

Ranking points

In addition to the wonderful Royal Selangor Pewter trophies and the prize money, the players also play for vital points for their world rankings. As the Shanghai Rolex Masters is an ATP Masters 1000 event, it means that the winner will earn 1,000 ranking points from the first round. A player losing in the singles first round still earns 10 points.
