Competition tests voice skills of racing fans
ORGANIZERS of this year’s F1 Chinese Grand Prix came up with a unique idea to entice motorsports enthusiasts in the country. The response they got was almost overwhelming.
On March 13, Juss Event, the local organizers, launched an amateur commentator competition, which was intended to get more fans involved in this year’s competition. The winners were promised that they would get an opportunity to work with real commentators during the Chinese Grand Prix.
The competition, “Ruisu Good Voice,” was flooded with over 1,000 voice samples from all over China. A team of selectors went through all of them and picked eight best samples. The eight participants were invited for a “final presentation” at the Shanghai Circuit on March 26.
They were grouped into four pairs. Each pair was asked to commentate on a randomly selected race fragment for two minutes. Their recordings were uploaded on the competition’s official website for public voting.
Liu Yifeng and Zhang Qian were declared the winners. The pair won 9,121 votes in four days — 48 percent of the total amount and 9 percent more than the second ranked pair. Liu and Zhang will join professional commentators Pan Yongyong and Zhang Haining during the live broadcasting of the race.
William Tiozzo was the youngest participant in the competition. Having an Italian father and a Chinese mother, it was natural for the 12-year-old to cheer for the Italian powerhouse Ferrari. Tiozzo did not make it to the final eight, but was invited to the circuit.
“I always wanted to become a racer,” said Tiozzo, a student of Shanghai High School. “I have not attended a race yet, but I hope to have the opportunity soon and cheer Ferrari and (Sebastian) Vettel, who is aggressive, just like me!”
Wang Lei, marketing director of Juss Event, said quiet a few of the entries were from out of Shanghai. “With other car-related activities and exhibitions at the Shanghai International Circuit during the three race days, motor sports fans can look forward to a fun-filled weekend.”
