Island hopping in wonderful Sweden

THIS summer my family went on a European tour for five weeks. We wanted to do some things we could not do in Shanghai. We visited England, Switzerland and Germany, but our biggest adventure was in Sweden.

The capital of Sweden is Stockholm. It was cool, lots of water. We took a boat to one side and visited an ice breaker ship which helps ships get through the ice in the winter. It gets very cold in Sweden. We walked through cobbles and small streets and I ate a lot of meatballs with cream sauce. We went to a real Viking restaurant where the man shouted “Please welcome the Christies from Scotland” and the whole restaurant banged tables and wooden cups and plates as we walked to our seats. It was very hot and noisy. We had great fun.

After Stockholm we took a ferry into the archipelago called the Skärgård, where there are over 30,000 islands and islets in the Baltic Sea. We were going to a remote island with no cars and only 20 houses. We had to take a ferry and a water taxi to get there. We had to carry all our luggage and all the food and drink we would need for four days there. We arrived on the island and my sister and I were very happy to see the beach but we did not like the huge ants that were crawling everywhere. We soon got used to them and learned to ignore them though. Our house had everything inside, even a sauna in the bathroom.

I went fishing with my Dad and we waved at the big boats and watched people on jet-skis jumping over the waves they made. We did not catch any fish, just lots of seaweed. We had rented a boat with the house and we were going to try and get to another island with a shop for ice cream. We did not go anywhere. The boat engine did not start so we rowed around the bay and went back to playing on the beach.

The last day on the island we had to leave early on a water taxi to catch the ferry to another island called Vetterso. We flew from Stockholm back to London and then drove to Yorkshire to our UK house. Grannie Laura was there and we were very excited to tell her about all our adventures.
