Quench your thirst with these great beverages

IT’S hot out. And it’s going to stay that way for another few weeks so it won’t take long to work up a thirst.

This week, Shanghai Daily iDEALShanghai recommends some healthy drinks, but first some information about the importance of water.

Why do we need water?

Water makes up 50 to 80 percent of lean body mass. Apart from helping maintain a balance of essential minerals, the body needs water to do the following:

• Regulating temperature, especially keeping you cool by allowing you to sweat.

• Digestion and processing of food, by keeping your gastrointestinal tract moist to aid in the passing of food through the gut.

• Absorption of nutrients and helping pass waste.

In severe cases, dehydration can be fatal.

Do you have to drink only water to stay hydrated?

All liquids help you stay hydrated. Water is the best choice because it has no sugar or calories. Most healthy people can get enough fluids through the beverages they consume every day. These include milk, tea and other drinks, as well as food like fruits and vegetables.

How much water do you need to drink every day?

A common recommendation is to drink eight glasses (250ml each) of water or other fluids every day. But experts have said people also obtain water through food. The body also produces about 250ml of water a day when metabolizing substances in the body. So six standard glasses of water per day is probably enough. But you will need more water when you exercise and in hot weather when the body sweats more.
